Why Field Joints Need Special Attention

During pipeline construction, pipe sections are joined by welding after the mainline coating has already been applied. The exposed joint must then be prepared and protected on site. Variations in weather, surface condition, access and workmanship can all affect the result.

A well-designed field-joint system should create a durable transition between the factory coating and the protected joint while resisting moisture ingress, soil stress and the operating conditions defined for the pipeline.

Start with the Operating Environment

Select a Compatible Protection System

Heat shrinkable sleeves, polymeric tapes, liquid coatings and other engineered technologies each have appropriate applications. The correct choice depends on the complete project requirement rather than one product characteristic.

Compatibility with the mainline coating, expected thermal and mechanical loads, installation method and inspection plan should be evaluated together. Early technical coordination can prevent delays and specification conflicts later in the project.

Control the Application Process

Consistent application requires trained personnel, suitable equipment and a documented sequence. Material storage, preheating where required, overlap, sealing and visual inspection should follow the approved procedure. Environmental conditions must also remain within the product’s application limits.

  • Verify material identification and storage condition before use.
  • Confirm surface preparation and joint readiness.
  • Monitor application parameters throughout installation.
  • Inspect the completed joint against the approved criteria.
  • Record results to support traceability and handover.
